This week on We Need to Talk, America's Sweetheart, back for season two, a new show on Netflix, Waterfront, and a very special guest. All right, morning. Is it morning? Look at my drink. Foggy like the fucking weather. I thought that. I thought we turned the corner yesterday. Yesterday I was like, it's finally here, everyone. Nope. It was a psych out. And here it is. So now there is tequila in my fresca, and it's foggy.

Yeah, what a nasty looking day. I just really can't. I went to girls' weekend. My college roommate had it at her lake house. She has this gorgeous house on a lake with a Where's the lake? Lake Wallen Pow Pack, which I never heard of. Somewhere in Pennsylvania, but beautiful. Oh, very nice, very nice. She has a beautiful home there, and she has a pool and boats, jet skis, and noodles, and floaties, and all this other stuff. And we were eight women. That's so nice. Nobody went in the pool and nobody went in the lake. Oh, because of the weather you said. Just because I don't know if it was nobody wanted to get their hair wet. It was too cold. It wasn't really summer weather. I don't know. But nobody went in at all. All we did was eat, take walks, and listen to music. But it was great. I loved getting to know all her friends and drink. Interesting. Some drinking. My vision of how the weekend was gonna go was that everybody's gonna be hammered. There was some what I would call light drinking.

So these are not all your college friends, or some of her friends also.

All her friends from different parts of her life. Oh, interesting. So she had a friend there that she knew since kindergarten. She had a friend there who she met on a family vacation when she was four. She's from Edgemont, Westchester. And so she had the Edgemont moms, and all these different women were very different. All of them. But the craziest thing was there were two therapists there. So the entire time I'm thinking they're totally overanalyzing us and thinking we're all insane. And of course, the fact that I don't really drive was a thing. So as I'm leaving, the two therapists are in the kitchen chatting, and I said, I'm sure you're gonna have a field day with me as I leave because my husband came to get me. They're part of the Edgemont moms. Oh no, no.

Well, you know what? I kind of feel like maybe she brought in some reassessments outside, it's uh outside counseling.

I just read two articles about girls' trips. One was on the Wall Street Journal, and it was all about the Hamptons. It was more like a girl's outing for a weekend. You could drop thousands of dollars. Yes. More about money. The other one was about mental health. It's more important for women than it is for men. All these statistics have been done and are out there that exist that women need other women on girls' trips. Absolutely. Like once a year, twice a year, whatever it is. I thought it was fascinating, yes. That you just said that because this literally this week I read two different articles.

I thought it was fascinating. I love my college roommate, she is one of my favorite people. And I know one of her friends from college, sort of, but to see who she decided to become friends with was fascinating. And you know, when you get to be our age, you're very accepting. So she called me to say, What did you think? And I said, You know what? I loved meeting everybody. I love all crazy, I love all sane, I love everything. But you like that though. I love it, I love it. I know, but I have to say, having therapists around. Did she slip you her card? Like maybe you want to give me a call, a therapist. Well, I said I have my own therapist, so I don't need you, but I did have a couple questions. And then I kept saying, Would you mind if I asked you a couple questions, even though you're sort of off the clock? And one of them was cool with it, the other not so much. That's fucking funny. But I will say, my cutester little roommate, she got us all little gift bags. That's nice. So they're like a Trader Joe's canvas bag. She's a house that doesn't let you wear shoes. So she gave us all little socks when we got there. Very nice in the bag. We had earplugs, we had eye masks, we had makeup remover and emory boards and chocolate snacks. Perfect.

She definitely got the Emily Post. I mean, I know you're great with the game. She got the Emily Post etiquette. I love that job. Because let me tell you, also very important. Emily Post does not have this in her book, but if she had done follow-up, I'm sure her daughter probably does. But if you are a no shoes household, I'm a no shoes.

Yes, I know. But one of the things that you should do, which is exactly what your college roommate did, when you're having a large number of people over and you're a no shoes household, you provide either those little almost like hospital slippers or little booties. Yeah, the covers. I've gone to plenty of dinner parties at no shoe households where they have it in the basket. The basket next to it, which is important. Right.

And the fact that we got to keep the socks, these socks are great. I love them. Yeah, I just love it. Who doesn't love a gift bag? You guys are really good with the gift bags too.

Well, you and my late grandmother Sabina are the only people I know. They get chauffeur back and forth.

And this was two hours away.

And they couldn't believe it. They kept saying, Your husband's gonna drive all the way here to get you. I go, Yeah, he is. And he did. And the thing is, they kept asking me, Do you not have a license? Do you not know how to drive? I said, No, no, I'm a driver. I drove 60 miles each way to work for 10 years. Like, I know how to drive. Yes, they don't want me to drive. So, bottom line is if you don't want me to drive, come pick me up, come take me. Hence the fact that we have a driver also, Buggy. We have a driver, not just your husband. Right. I have Ralph, the driver, and then I have my husband and well, I'll lose. I'm losing my son as my one of my drivers, but I keep saying, maybe I could get a car again because I don't have my own car.

If I never had to drive again, I'd be happy. Yeah, I say it all the time. We have had this conversation. If we were to hit ladder tomorrow, I would have a driver as a stylist. I don't want to do my hair. I don't want to drive ever again.

Agree. I love not driving, but I don't like the judgment of people who think right now. Like they're like, oh, is he controlling? Is everything okay at home? Oh, yeah, they fucking talked about you the whole way home.

Except there was one other woman there who was crazier than me. So I felt confident that So you hung out with her. Listen, I hung out with everybody because I love everybody's stories, but there was one woman crazier than me. So I think that when the two therapists were, you know, texting each other on the side, they were probably thinking this other one, cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs, in the best possible way, because I loved her. But I think I was of the eight girls, I was probably number two of crazy. This is great. I love it. So good.

But it was fun. I had a really, really good time. I'm very glad. I'm very glad. Did you see fucking freaky? We were just talking about this. Is the hot air balloon accident in Brazil? It was so weird that we were just talking about it. Because we are right, you don't get these fucking things. Eight people died, it went up in flames. What do you need to know, people?

Very sad. All the social media posts are sad, and she was a huge Ranger fan. Always on the big screen, the Rangers. Oh, I didn't even know that. The Rangers put out a post. It was very sad. Just got married.

Yeah, later in life marriage, which I always love. Me too. It's really oh and Burrell. And now I'm thinking, are she and Anthony Bourdain hanging out, cooking together, partying? Definitely. I think so. Definitely.

Well, my friend Amy, who's a very stylish person, but she texted me a picture from 30 years ago. Her, I think, ex-husband purchased a La Perla gorgeous set for her. It's still in the box, it still has the labels on it, and she's never worn it. That's hilarious. I said you should put it on the LaPurla Facebook page. But people are talking all about these matching sets with me all the time.

I'm gonna say something I learned, but I'm not gonna reveal the person because that's just a privacy issue. But it's one of our listeners talking about the matching sets, and she says to me that although she doesn't wear matching sets, her undergarments or underwear matches the color of her outfit. So, for example, if she is wearing a navy dress or navy pants, she is wearing navy underwear. So she has every color of the clothes she has. The reason why I find this so also why does it matter? Amazing is because obviously with white, you have to wear white or nude or whatever because of see-through.

Even in pattern, if I was wearing a fuchsia, I'm definitely wearing in the pink family underwear. But my point is this. So that means she's very like so.

When she wakes up and she's putting her shit together to wear, yeah, to do her job or to go out for for dinner, she's also thinking about does my underwear match what I'm gonna wear.

But this is my point. People take the whole thing as part of self-care. You know what I mean? Yes, I guess whether it's the matching set or not, part of her routine in getting dressed is to make sure her undergarments match her color.

I think she has one of those crayon, you know, like in the crayon family, all the colors are a descendant of the other color. That's what I think. Blue is not really blue, or purple's not really purple, you know what I mean? Right. They're like they come from somewhere. That has to be it. Who knew that this topic was gonna have such distraction? It's actually crazy. I even have our male listeners saying, is this really a thing? I don't know. Yes, yes, it is. It's a thing.

The verdict for the Karen Reed trial came out this week and she was found not guilty.

Most of my friends and some of the listeners that texted me, I think we all thought she was innocent, but we all feel that there's something shady.

Oh, yeah, definitely shady, definitely drinking and driving situation, some type of cover-up, I think. I don't think anything was done on purpose. Nothing happened, and then there became like a cover-up situation. Right. I just hope that the truth really does then eventually come out, but who knows?

So we do have a guest, like I said, so we gotta get right into it. We need to start with America's Sweethearts because last year, if you remember, I put America's Sweethearts in my top five. Yes.

For anybody who doesn't know what it is, it's the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders tryouts, and then you start to see what happens once they get on the team and throughout the season, what happens. And it's pretty intense, and we love these girls, and we love the two women that run the program are Kelly Finglass and Judy. And they've been doing this.

We said that 40 years for 40 years. This is their job, it's their career, but it also was a TLC show, right? Remember? Right. But I never watched the TLC show. I did, and it's a long time ago in a million seasons, but I watched it, but nothing like this. Nothing like what Netflix did. This is the second season that just dropped. It is just unbelievable.

It's unbelievable. And what you have to remember, people, is this is not their full-time job. So they all have other things going on. Some women that are going to school, to college, there are some who work a full day and then go to practice and go to the games. One thing that transpired this season is they were getting paid $500 a game. And then if they get brand deals or if they get appearances, they get paid in addition to that. But $500 a game for the amount of work they put in is ridiculously low to me. And so some of the women got together to challenge this for the first time ever to seek a pay raise. Yes. So that was fascinating that that transpired. And I wonder if they met together to say, hey, we're gonna be on TV. Everybody's watching. We were the number one show last year. Let's use it to our advantage and get more money.

It's exactly what happened. Of course. I never do this, but I did this for the show. I went down a Reddit.

Oh, you did the Reddit thing?

I did because first I was obsessed with this Shandy thing. Yeah. Then I was obsessed with the pay raise. We'll get to the shandy thing in a minute, but I went down a Reddit rabbit hole. It's 50-50 out there as far as oh, using this platform, using Netflix. You gotta use what you got. I don't know if I agree with that. You gotta use what you got as right. In 2022 season, they made about $400, $500 a game. So now, as a result of the show and what these girls did, they got approximately a 400% uh raise, and they're making about $1,200 a game now. Right. So one could argue that you can maybe sustain uh along with doing different ad deals and stuff, a living now off of just this. But previously, you can't afford to pay rent and to continue to do all the things you do with just being a DCC. And so good for them.

Yeah, I think that they deserve it. The thing is, there's 36 girls, so not all 36 are getting brand deals and appearances. Maybe the top 10, top 12 get these extra deals. So the person who's number 36 is getting how many home games? 1,200 times 10 home games, so $12,000.

And it's not you know, that's not cash, that's on the books. And the other thing is there's a max of how long you do it. So they only get to do this for five years. So really they need to have plan B but on Reddit, they were like, no one becomes a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader for the money and so and so and so. And I understand that part, right? You basically know. I mean, that rule book has been the same since the 70s. So we get it. Listen, everyone's getting paid nowadays. Why shouldn't they get paid? Give me a fucking I was all for them getting a raise. Me too. So good for them. Right now, it's all over social media that they got about a 400% pay increase. So muzzle tough.

But I want to make sure people understand that just because it's a 400%, well, most of them all still need a second job, no matter what, because it's a short season, but you got to train and you got all this PT, and it's just so much to it.

So much to it. It's so crazy. What I thought was interesting in this season. So last season, for those listeners who watched it, there was a fan favorite Victoria. Right. She was going into her fifth and final year, but did not return. Right. One of the reasons about the not return was body weight. So crazy when you think about it. But they did show her and she moved to New York and she was trying out to be she got a really nice apartment. She's trying out to be a rockette. She did not make it onto the rockettes.

So now she's trying for another time. But good for her.

She's following her dreams, doing what she needs to do. So the side thing that happened this year was crazy. Shandy. So they picked these leaders of each group. Um and the main leader this year, there were two, Jada and Shandy. And Shandy had some issues. And towards the end of the show, they all go to the Bahamas for this retreat. She had a boyfriend, Shandy, and apparently she was having some sort of mental breakdown and met a guy, brought him back to her room, which is not allowed.

So again, all these rules, right? You never see anybody with alcohol, no outside people. I don't know if she was having some relationship issues in general. She was a victim of domestic violence in her previous relationship, which was terrible. And so was her mother. But they did show her with her boyfriend this whole season. Yeah, and we thought he was a good guy. Right. So goes to the Bahamas, meets a guy, brings him back to the room. I don't really know what transpired from there, but then the girls were freaking out because that's not allowed. And she broke the rules. Broke code and you know, safety issues. So I'm 10 minutes into eight, but I've I've been down this Reddit thing, so I basically know. So she comes back, and because of all this and people like reporting her and all this stuff, she then goes to HR and says that she was having mental health issues. And so Reddit people are, it's actually a shame that now she's using her mental health as an excuse because they can't fire her when she goes to HR and says she's mental health. So it becomes this whole fucking case. But she ended up leaving anyway. But they also claim that she was the one who went to HR to say that they were on a Zoom call and reported them. Yeah, they say she was the rat that reported them about the pay increase meeting and the possible walkout of practice.

So they kept saying she was a lot of bit of a shit stirrer here. I don't know what's true or not. None of it excuses the fact that she was abused in a previous relationship. Right. But there's more that meets the eye.

And then the only other thing I wanted to say about it was last year there was this girl from Weehawk in New Jersey, Kelly, right? That was her name, Kelly V. Kelly. And she didn't make it. And she stayed in Texas and she trained all year and she auditions, and spoiler alert, she makes it. So for me, I was so happy that my New Jersey girl made it. It was so exciting.

I did enjoy it. That was that Australian kind of murder mystery. But the reason why I'm bringing it up is it relates to waterfront. First of all, people are fucked up, right? And so that's why you can't live in a small town. Because the ratio is higher of the fucked up people, right? Of course. So now everybody around you is kind of fucked up. You have no shot of, you know, I don't know, larger groups of people. So when you move to these like towns, like these waterfront people and the fucking survivor people, it's too fucked up. There's crazies everywhere. And if everybody's eating at the same restaurant, all the shit goes together, you gotta go to bigger cities.

The Buccaneers is back. It took a while. I totally had wet brain. But if you didn't watch season one of The Buccaneers, it's out on Apple TV Plus. Season two just dropped. I was shocked too that they only dropped one episode. Usually it's Apple give us two or three, but that's fine because I had to catch up on other things.

I didn't watch this episode. Okay. It was so uncomfortable to watch. The fact that Captain Carrie is okay with is just crazy. But you gotta see this episode. And we get another one. But oh my gosh, eight gay porn stars. And then the other thing is if Angest Like That couldn't get worse, you think how bad, how bad could a show get? Well, it got as bad as it could get. If it goes even further at how bad it could be, I'll be amazed at how bad someone can make a show. It's just I don't even know what to say. Carrie's in friggin' West Virginia, she's in these friggin' crazy shoes, and she's on a freaking ATV, and there's family drama with Aiden's fan. Like, we don't care. Get back to the city. Come on. So I gave myself three hours a week, and then what happens is so let's say I want to go onto Instagram. Oh my gosh.

It'll say to me, why do you want to go on it? And you get 30 seconds before you go on to say, Why do I want to go on it? So I think I'm gonna do it just for TikTok. So I could put TikTok back on my phone and give myself three hours of TikTok a week. And then have a chance. If that was your issue, you were spending too much time. Too much time. I would say, Oh, I'm just gonna go on for 15 minutes. And the next thing I know, it's three o'clock in the morning and four hours later. I'm on the family room. By myself, somebody created an app for you. I don't know what you would have done. Classic Movie Hub is the social media source for the celebration of classic movies and entertainment. Now I've gotten to know Anne Marie over the past five years. Her background is in marketing for large music, media, and entertainment companies. And she already has a side hustle because she's a musician.

So finally we got her today because what started as a hobby for Anne-Marie now has about 1.5 million followers.

How did this all come to fruition? Have you always been a fan of the classics?

Yes. Well, you know what? I grew up with the classics. When I was a little girl, I mean, I was probably five, six, seven years old. My dad introduced me to the Marx Brothers and Wows and Charlie Chaplin. When I was a little girl, I was probably about six years old. My dad dressed me up like Charlie Chaplin. I had his big hat, and it came with then we made a fake mustache and I walked up and down the driveway while he filmed me. So I grew up with the classics. And then with my mom, she wasn't that comedy type person, she liked the romances. So I remember being in grammar school and we'd watched Wuthering Heights. Catherine, Catherine, great. Oh, she loved it happened one night. So I grew up with classic movies, and I've just always loved them. I've always gravitated toward them. And what happened was during my day job, a couple years, probably about 2008, 2009, I'm like, you know what? I want to learn how to build a website. So I enrolled in some pretty intense classes in my spare time and learned how to code. Oh, wow. Yeah, the website was built from scratch. I'm not a great coder. I had to hire a tutor for many years because you can't just learn coding after taking continuing ed classes. So what happened was the final exam for my college continuing ed program was to build a website. So I'm like, all right. And it was a one-page website for my final exam. And now it's a lot of pages.

Yeah, it's great. We checked it out. I'm a big list person, so I loved the list of the movies from each decade. And to be very, very transparent, there's a ton of them that I've never seen. So I already started my own list of I have a lot to catch up on list.

Are you doing this alone, Emery? While you're doing your full-time job, how do you even find the time for all this?

Yeah, because you also answer everybody. Yeah, I stay very lit, and I and I spend my weekends doing a lot of this. Okay. The one thing great about this website was when I started, and I started my Twitter X, whatever you want to call it now, my Twitter at the time and Facebook. I started with nothing. But because there's such a tight-knit classic movie community, I met some amazing people through Twitter, like experts in film noir, experts in sci-fi, but they're great people. And I've actually become very close friends with a number of them. We had never met, you know, just met through Twitter and then we'd meet up at a festival, you know, and oh, I'm Anne Marie. And it was great. So many of those people write as part of Classic Movie Hub. So I have a lot of really special, well-known people in the classic movie community contributing to my website, which is really exciting because to be honest, I'm a scaredy cat, so I don't like anymore. I don't really watch horror unless it's Frankenstein or something. Right. So, you know, I'm more of the romantic comedy, screwball comedy, drama. So it's great to have this really tight-knit group of people that just love classic movies. And I have someone who writes only about Westerns. And what happens is I start looking at them like, oh, let me check out a film Noir. Well, let me check out a Western, but I'm learning and I'm growing, and that's like the best part.

Yeah. Because you could watch anything you want on your own. I'm a cord cutter. I do get sucked into a lot of the more current programs, but I tend to watch them when they're done. Like I just finished watching Goliath and I watch Outlander, but I've watched Squid Game, the first one. Yeah, right, right, right. I'm Waiting for Stranger Things, although that scared the bejeevas of me.

We asked some of our listeners about what their favorite classics is in preparation for this. So I'm cracking up because I was depressed when I saw Jaws on your website, but we got some good ones, but then some interesting ones that we wanted to run by you. So rear window, which definitely classic.

Once upon a time in America, like we're getting the 80s. I mean, that could be called a classic, but that's not in your world a classic.

Well, here's the thing. So there's two ways to look at classics, right? There is really a defined classic Hollywood era. Okay. That goes from the beginnings through the early to mid-60s. That's a defined uh film era, if you want. In the mid-60s, it's the new Hollywood era that started. So for me, I like to talk about the classic Hollywood era. Some people also called it the Golden Age. Yeah. Right. But typically, and what happens in the 60s is you have some films that lean more toward the golden age, classic Hollywood, some films that lean more toward the American New Wave, which is the new Hollywood era. They generally say the pivot point was Bonnie and Clyde in 1967. But there's things that flow back and forth. But that's the classic era of Hollywood defined. But the word classic nowadays is, I think, used more to define things that are just like stand the test of time. Right. Right. So I get it. It's just funny because I was really struggling with posting about Jaws the other day because I'm like, well, that's not a classic era Hollywood all the day. But you know what? It's a classic. So that's why I kind of said, okay, I'm testing the waters. Oh, forgive the pun. I'm testing. Because I do know that people love some very amazing newer air quotes movies as well.

Right. For me, I always think like it's Breakfast at Tiffany's or it's Casablanca. Those are mine. Yes. And but when we put it out there for our listeners, they say like Princess Bride, Godfather Part Two, Grave Art, 1995. How could Casablanca be with Grave Art?

But again, The Princess Bride, adore that movie. And The Godfather, these are classics. They may not be from the classic era of Hollywood, the defined classic era of Hollywood.

Well, then there's a broad sense of what classic is. So our listeners aren't that off base then.

It's what's classic to them. So again, as long as you don't say it's my favorite classic Hollywood era movie, because if it's their favorite classic, look, I mean, there are, let's face it, there are amazing films and amazing directors and amazing performances after 1967, right? And they will be considered classics for years to come. They just weren't from the classic Hollywood era.

I'm not an expert. I just want to clear this up. I am not an expert in classic movies. I'm just a huge fan.

So for me, I gravitate toward comedy. So I love people to be like, but that's so sexist. But you have to look at them at the time they were put out. But I love Pillow Talk. I think that's good movie. Um, I love my favorite wife, Charlie Chaplin, The Gold Rush. City Lights. My God, one minute you're laughing, the next minute you're bawling like a baby. I saw that at uh Lincoln Center, and I brought some people with me who had never seen a Charlie Chaplin movie, and it was with the Philharmonic, and they were shocked. They were laughing and then they were crying in the same movie. And they were like, oh my god, I never knew Charlie Chaplin was so great. I love Wuthering Heights. I love You Can't Take It With You. There's just so many, the more the merrier. I tend to go towards screwball comedies, but then I greatly respect, like I'm not a big fan of war movies, and I I had to write something about Bridge on the on the River Kwai. And I'm like, oh boy, all right. I guess I gotta watch Bridge on the River Qui. It was one of the most amazing movies I've ever seen.
